Vaping has quickly grown in popularity since it was introduced to the United States in 2007. As the industry grows, so do the options for vaporizers and other vaping accessories.
What is a Vaporizer?
To put it simply, a vaporizer is an electronic device that uses heat to turn various vaping materials into vapor which can be inhaled. Vapor is different from smoke in that it is not the by-product of combustion. Therefore, it does not contain all of the particulate matter and noxious gasses that are in smoke. This makes it much healthier for you than smoking traditional cigarettes.
How Does It Work?
There are several different styles of vaporizers, but most of them consist of a rechargeable battery, main console or housing, cartridges, and an atomizer or cartomizer.
Vaporizers heat materials in two main ways to create vapor; conduction, and convection.
In conduction vaporization, the vaping material comes into direct contact with the heating element to produce vapor. When vaping first became popular this was the most common heating method, but it is not used as much now. It is the quickest method of vaporization, but it can lead to combustion if not done properly.
With convection vaporization, the vaping material never actually comes into contact with the heat source. Instead, the vaporizer heats the air and then passes this heated air over the material, turning it to vapor. This is generally now the preferred method of vaporization.
There are several different types of materials that can be vaped, and the configuration of your vaporizer will change depending on what you are using it for. Most vapers use e-liquids like vape juice, but you can also vape waxy concentrates and dry herbs. Some vaporizers are multi-compatible, allowing you to vape more than one type of substance without having to purchase a separate vaporizer.
Types of Vaporizers
There are four main types of vaporizers. They are all a bit different in their functionality and have different features and benefits.
Whip style vaporizers are convection, or hot air vaporizers. They use a “whip” attachment to draw vapor. The whip consists of a glass wand where herbs are packed, a piece of medical grade tubing, and a mouthpiece. This style of vaporizer is a desktop model. They have been around for a long time, are very popular, easy to use, and are quite affordable.
Forced air vaporizers are also desktop convection vaporizers. They are new on the vape scene and are extremely effective. As their name suggests, forced air units use an internal fan to push hot air over the herbs. There is zero chance of combustion and the resulting vapor is incredibly pure and clean. The vapor can then be inhaled through a whip attachment or collected in a balloon bag. Forced air vaporizers are the most efficient and the healthiest way to produce vapor currently on the market.
Portable vaporizers are very popular these days, as they allow you to vape pretty much wherever you are. They are direct draw, which means that they have a built-in mouthpiece from which you inhale vapor flowing right off of the heating unit. They can be found in both conduction and convection versions. Portable vapes can be made for either dry herb or e-liquids. While the large majority of them are rechargeable, there are some butane and flame options available.
Vape pens or e-cigs are the smallest types of vaporizers. Like the portable models, they are direct-draw. They have the distinct advantages of being discreet, easy to use, and cheap. They also heat up very quickly. The largest down-side to vape pens is that they almost all utilize conduction heating, which means you have to be careful that your vape material doesn’t get overheated or burned.
